100% Volunteer Led
Volunteers make a significant impact on the lives of HOBY participants, while also having an opportunity to evaluate their own life goals and objectives, share their experiences, and have fun!
Volunteers come from all backgrounds and experiences to work together towards realizing HOBY’s vision. HOBY volunteers are keynote speakers and guest panelists who challenge students’ ideas about leadership; they are group facilitators who guide participants through their experience; they are advocates who engage local communities and companies to help fund the participants’ program costs; they are recruiters who share the HOBY story and encourage schools to get involved; and they are professionals who serve on the boards and program committees of HOBY state corporations and provide guidance on program planning, marketing, finances and more. With volunteers aged 17 to over 80, HOBY seeks out energetic and driven individuals who want to make a difference, motivate young people and serve their communities.
Come volunteer for HOBY! Whether you are a long-time volunteer and plan to continue for the coming year, or a potential new volunteer and want to learn more, please complete the offical HOBY volunteer application. If you don’t know what your role might be, that’s fine too – please apply online, and we’ll find a volunteer opportunity for you!
Join our 2020 Seminar Planning team!
It is time to start planning for our 2020 seminar – June will be here before we know it! HOBY Maine will be held June 5-7, 2020 with on-site required staff arriving on June 4th.
We have had some changes in our volunteer planning team over the summer. Andrea Levinsky has decided to put her energies into other opportunities – however, she is leaving the Leadership in Action element of our program in a great spot! We are grateful for Andrea's contributions over the years and wish them her the very best.
We are excited to announce that after serving in the Director of Operations role for the last several years, Megan Clifton will be stepping up as the Co – Leadership Seminar Chair of Experience. Megan will oversee all of the back of house elements of the ambassador experience for 2020.
The final change this year is Kim Kuusela will transition to the Corporate Board President and Sydney will transition back to Co-Leadership Seminar Chair of Engagement. We had planned on moving Kim to the Corporate Board in 2021 but due to some personal things for both Syd and Kim we chose to move up that timetable. Sydney will serve in the LSC role for 2020 and then will be taking a step back from key HOBY Leadership roles after serving for 14 years.
To support the growth and development of our volunteers, and our organization, we have spent some time this summer working on job roles and descriptions. We examined what has worked and not worked for us in the past and also benchmarked structures at other HOBY sites. You can find the roles and descriptions in the attached document. If you are interested in applying for any of our Seminar Planning Team positions, please fill out this application. If you have questions, feel free to reach out to Sydney, Megan or Kim.
If you have any interest in a planning role either now or in the future, we encourage you to fill out this application. We are trying to create some succession plans and knowing who is interested will help us greatly! Select as many areas of interest as you please, then explain why they are of interest to you! We want to know what you want to get out of your planning team experience, where you want to grow, what ideas for improvement do you have and what skills will you bring to your volunteer role?
Please note that some roles are “OSR” or On-Site Required meaning you would participate in pre-seminar planning from September to June as well as be expected to attend the seminar in full. Some roles are “DVR” or Day Volunteer Roles meaning that you would participate in pre-seminar planning as well as be expected to be on site on a particular day as a day volunteer but not spend the night on site. Some roles are “PSPR” or Pre-Seminar Planning Roles meaning that you would participate in pre-seminar planning but would not have a role on site in this position. However, in a PSPR, you could apply for an on-site role such as facilitator, operations team, junior staff or medic. (Applications for these roles will come out at a later date.) Please note that some positions have specific age requirements. Unless noted, most positions are a 1-year term.
You will notice this application does NOT include any seminar specific roles (facilitators, junior staff, media, etc.). Applications for these roles will be sent later this year.
