Kahla attended HOBY Maine in 2010 as an ambassador from Boothbay Region High School and as a Junior Facilitator in 2012. She is currently a sophomore at Bowdoin College. When asked why she wanted to return to volunteer at HOBY Maine she said: "When I was a sophomore, HOBY instilled in me leadership skills, helped me come out of my shell a little, and also showed me why volunteering was so important. Last year, I was a junior facilitator, and got to see firsthand how the HOBY seminar can rock other high school sophomores' world and really help to bridge connections between people that don't even know each other Friday, but are best friends by the end of the weekend! This year, I want to come back again (this time, working behind the scenes) to make an even better experience for everyone participating." Her favorite quote is: "Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be?", Marianne Williamson (originally from Akeelah and the Bee movie) Please join us in welcoming Kahla to the HOBY 2014 team! ![]() Many thanks once again to Hannaford Supermarkets, one of our Community Sponsors for 2014. Thank you for your continued support of our young leaders in Maine! ![]() We are pleased to welcome Mariah Farrington to HOBY Maine 2014 as a Junior Facilitator. Mariah attended HOBY last year as an ambassador from Katahdin High School. When asked why she wanted to return to HOBY she said: "What inspires me to volunteer with HOBY Maine is that the leaders of the organization realize the rewards of humility and volunteerism. This is giving back to the people who have changed your life. I have always loved helping others, and being challenged in my generosity by seeing how willing I was to spend many more hours helping others really made me step aside to self-examine myself. The hours I spent volunteering, I realize, really did benefit the general public, and that on its own is enough to satisfy me; but HOBY takes an extra step and prepares you for your own projects in leadership and cultural experiences. HOBY is now a piece of who I am and now, through their training, I know how to give a piece of myself back to them." It is fitting that Mariah's favorite quote is from Gandhi: "Be the change you wish to see in the world." Welcome Mariah to HOBY 2014! |
